In 2014, Michelle Cantin turned her ideas into reality with the launch of the Coupe Femina. The annual, women-only event aims to bring women together in a two-day event in Lévis, Quebec.
On August 6, the Coupe Femina took off from the Parc Nautique Lévy marina for a 32 nautical mile race. With over 174 participants, 2019 recorded the highest number of entries since the event began in 2014.
The two-day event includes learning and racing. The first day teaches women the theory and gives them a chance to practice on the water as they prepare for the next day. Founded by Michelle Cantin, the Coupe Femina aims to bring together women from all regions of Quebec who share a passion for sailing. "Coupe Femina is a distinctive event where drive, determination, courage, team spirit, endurance and motivation come together to encourage female leadership."
The organizing committee will create teams as needed, based on experience, to ensure that everyone has a fair chance of winning. Any woman may enter, provided she has basic sailing training or equivalent experience.
Non seulement cet événement permet aux femmes de concourir dans un environnement confortable, mais il présente également la voile aux jeunes femmes. «C’est aussi un concours dans les écoles secondaires invitant les jeunes filles de 15 à 17 ans à s’inscrire», explique Michelle. «Par la suite, un jury sélectionne 9 jeunes pour composer les 3 équipages qui relèveront ce défi nautique. Une formation de 30 heures en voile croisière leur est offerte par l’École de voile Formation Nautique Québec, incluant l’encadrement d’un instructeur par équipage jusqu’à la course.»
